A Ton of Clay by Ian Meintyre
The installation was commissioned by Jerwood Visual Arts. It is made from a Ton of clay and comprises of hundreds of stacked plates and bowls. A nod to the practice of the late 20th century production potter Isaac Button and his notoriety for being able to throw a ton of clay pots in any one day. But if you observe minutely, the project is more about the personality, material and the presence of external force. Ian Meintyre makes minimal products and for this project he used a ton of clay to be used in Jigger and Jolly for the mass production of plates and bowls made from a single mould. Although made from the same mould, each and every piece is unique in itself as he doesn’t get rid of the buffer/excess clay produced at the rim of the plates and bowls justifying every ceramic ware to be different in its own way.
